Dining in Little Italy

Naturally, you’d expect to find off-the-charts awesome Italian food in Little Italy-and you do. There are loads of Italian restaurants to savor. Po Pazzo (1917 India Street) is an urban bar and grill that puts a modern spin on old favorites like butternut squash ravioli, succulent steaks, and lemon chicken. Trattoria Fantastica (1735 India Street) has a cozy rear patio for al fresco dining on classics like saltimbocca and linguine with clams. Mona Lisa Restaurant and Deli (2061 India Street) delivers the taste of Italy in an old school way, with no-nonsense booths and banquettes in which to enjoy your pizza, antipasti, or manicotti.

Little Italy Farmers’ Mercato

Every Saturday, from 8 a.m. to 2 p.m., join locals on India and W. Date streets for the weekly Certified Farmer’s Market (or mercato in Italian). Bring your reusable bags and baskets, and fill them up with fresh vegetables, fruits, eggs, cheese, herbs, and flowers. You’ll also find poultry, meat, and fish, as well as pasta, breads, sauces, honey, and coffee. Getting hungry? Food booths sell delicious smoothies, paninis, crepes, and more. There’s always live music, so stick around for the entertainment while you munch.

What and when is the Annual Festa?

Festa is a celebratory street fair focusing on all things Italian. Held in October-around the time of Columbus Day-the festival includes music on three stages, cooking demos and contests, and booths with Italian food for sale. Entertainment includes a Kids Fun Zone with face painting, balloon magic, and bounce houses. Gesso Italiano features gorgeous yet temporary works of chalk art, and there’s a spot for kids to get creative too. Round out the day at the Bocce Ball tournament and the Stickball exhibition game.

What is Kettner Art and Design District?

A large concentration of Little Italy North’s art galleries and shops can be found on Kettner Boulevard. Here you can shop for fabulous one-of-a-kind gifts and collectibles. Check out locally made jewelry, purses, artwork, home décor and furniture. Each month, the second Friday is Kettner Nights from 6 to 9 p.m. Rub shoulders with San Diego artists during this art walk while sipping cocktails and noshing on appetizers.
